Rookie Bronze Awards 1.2 & 3


Upon completion of Bronze Stages 1, 2 and 3, Rookie Lifeguards should be able to:

  1. Enter shallow water safely and confidently and wade
  2. Tread water and signal for help
  3. Swim continuously in clothing for 50m
  4. Swim Lifesaving Backstroke
  5. Scull head and feet first
  6. Hold the ‘HELP’ position
  7. Demonstrate a non-swimmer, weak swimmer and an unconscious casualty
  8. Demonstrate a ‘Shout and Signal’ rescue
  9. Throw an aid
  10. Demonstrate a reach rescue
  11. Enter deep water safely and confidently
  12. Perform a feet first surface dive and swim underwater
  13. Climb out in deep water without using the steps

Rookie Silver Awards 1,2 & 3


Upon completion of Silver Stages 1, 2 and 3 Rookie Lifeguards should be able to:

  1. Swim continuously in clothing for 200m on your front and back
  2. Demonstrate a reaching rescue
  3. Throw a buoyant aid to a casualty 8m away
  4. Enter shallow water and wade to a casualty
  5. Using a throwing aid, instruct the casualty what to do
  6. Using a rigid aid instruct the casualty what to do
  7. The support position
  8. Tread water for 3 minutes
  9. Swimming, surface dives and object recovery
  10. Shallow turn and rescue an ‘unconscious casualty’
  11. Coil and throw a rope to a casualty 10m away and pull to the side in less than 45 seconds
  12. Enter deep water using a straddle jump
  13. Demonstrate a fall-in entry into clear deep water
  14. Swim 20m continuously with your head out of the water on your front

Rookie Gold Awards 1, 2 & 3


Upon completion of Gold Stages 1, 2 and 3 Rookies should be able to:

  1. Coil and throw a rope to a casualty and pull to the side
  2. Swim 400m continuously in clothing
  3. Demonstrate Lifesaving Backstroke, Sidestroke, Breaststroke or Front Crawl
  4. Tread water, removing clothing then swim 50m
  5. Climb out of deep water unaided
  6. Demonstrate fall-in, compact jump or shallow dive
  7. Demonstrate a Reverse
  8. Demonstrate a Standoff
  9. Rescue an unconscious casualty at depth in less than 2 minutes 30 seconds
  10. Demonstrate supported rescue breathing whilst waiting for help
  11. Demonstrate the support position
  12. Demonstrate non-contact rescues
  13. Treat for shock
  14. Hand signals
  15. Using any recognised competitive stroke, swim 400m continuously, in less than 12 minutes

Rookie Master Award


Rookie Master Lifeguard Award recognises Rookie Lifeguards who have achieved an outstanding standard through the Rookie Lifeguard programme. Instructors should present the Rookie Master Lifeguard Award to any Rookie Lifeguard who achieves the following criteria:

  • Gold Level 3
  • Rookie Lifeguard Water Safety Award
  • Rookie Lifeguard Life Support
  • Any 3 additional bolt-on awards

This introductory award looks at emergency treatments of causalities.  It includes CPR, dealing with an unconscious casualty, choking, shock, bleeding and vomiting.

  3. Perform a reach rescue to a casualty 2 metres away
  4. Perform a throwing rescue to a casualty 3 to 4 metres away
  5. Perform a wade swim rescue to a casualty 15 metres away
  6. Perform the H.E.L.P. position with a rescue tube and ‘shout and signal for help’ for 1 minute
  7. Swim/wade 20 metres, perform a surface dive and retrieve an object
  8. Perform an unconscious casualty turn and tow
  9. Perform supported rescue breaths on an unconscious casualty
  10. Swim 20 metres to a casualty and swim 20 metres back in 1 minute 30 seconds

STA RESCUE  TUBE  WITH  FINS

  1. Fit a pair of fins and safely enter the water
  2. Swim continuously with a rescue tube and fins, 20 metres breaststroke and 20 metres head up front crawl
  3. Perform a reach rescue to a casualty 2 metres away
  4. Perform a throwing rescue to a casualty 3 to 4 metres away
  5. Perform a swim rescue with fins to a casualty 15 metres away
  6. Perform the H.E.L.P. position with a rescue tube and ‘shout and signal for help’ for 1 minute
  7. Swim/wade 20 metres, perform a surface dive and retrieve an object with fins
  8. Perform an unconscious casualty turn and tow with fins
  9. Perform supported rescue breaths on an unconscious casualty
  10. Swim 20 metres to a casualty and swim 20 metres back in 1 minute 10 seconds

STA FIN  SWIMMING  -  POOL

  1. Fit a pair of fins and safely enter the water
  2. Enter the water using a giant stride, slide-in or walk-in entry
  3. Swim 20 metres front crawl with fins
  4. Swim 20 metres head up front crawl with fins
  5. Swim 20 metres side stroke with fins
  6. Swim 20 metres backstroke with fins
  7. Tread water for 2 minutes with fins
  8. Tread water without using hands for 30 seconds with fins
  9. Perform a surface dive, swim underwater for 5 metres using a dolphin leg action and ascend to the surface safely
  10. Swim 3 metres on the surface and 3 metres underwater with a buddy
  11. Walk out or climb out and remove fins safely

STA FIN  SWIMMING  -  BEACH

  1. Fit a pair of fins and safely enter the water
  2. Enter the water using a giant stride, slide-in or walk-in entry
  3. Swim 20 metres front crawl with fins
  4. Swim 20 metres head up front crawl with fins
  5. Swim 20 metres side stroke with fins
  6. Swim 20 metres backstroke with fins
  7. Tread water for 2 minutes with fins
  8. Tread water without using hands for 30 seconds with fins
  9. Perform a surface dive, swim underwater for 5 metres using a dolphin leg action and ascend safely
  10. Swim 3 metres on the surface and 3 metres underwater with a buddy
  11. Walk out or climb out and remove fins safely

STA BOOGIE  BOARD  -  POOL

  1. Describe the main features of a boogie board
  2. Paddle 20 metres front crawl, turn 180 degrees, paddle 20 metres butterfly, stop and turn 180 degrees
  3. Perform a 15 metre conscious co-operative non contact rescue using a boogie board
  4. Perform a 75 metre paddle in 40 seconds
  5. Perform a 10 metre unconscious casualty rescue
  6. Simulate rescue breaths to an unconscious non-breathing casualty

STA BOOGIE  BOARD  -  BEACH

  1. Describe the main features of a boogie board
  2. Paddle 20 metres front crawl, turn 180 degrees, paddle 20 metres butterfly, stop and turn 180 degrees
  3. Perform a 20 metre conscious co-operative non contact rescue using a boogie board
  4. Perform a 75 metre paddle in 50 seconds
  5. Perform a 10 metre unconscious casualty rescue
  6. Simulate rescue breaths to an unconscious non-breathing casualty
  7. Launch a boogie board into the water
  8. Demonstrate a ‘Duck Under’
  9. Perform a roll, regain control, remount the boogie board and continue to paddle
  10. Land a conscious co-operative casualty through the surf zone safely

STA POOL  SNORKELLING  1

  1. Prepare and fit the equipment correctly
  2. Perform a safe entry into shallow water
  3. Clear water from the snorkel using the blast/displacement method. Resume breathing through snorkel without lifting the face from the water
  4. Fin 25 metres, breathing through the snorkel
  5. Understand 4 hand signals
  6. Perform a surface dive and return to the surface. Clear the snorkel on the surface using blast/displacement method
  7. Exit the water safely and remove snorkelling equipment independently
  8. Participate in a snorkelling game

STA POOL  SNORKELLING  2

  1. Prepare and fit the equipment correctly
  2. Perform 3 different types of safe entries
  3. Clear a fogged mask at the surface
  4. Swim 100 metres using a flutter kick
  5. Understand 6 hand signals
  6. Swim 20 metres at the surface in water too deep to stand while wearing snorkelling equipment
  7. Perform two surface dives, clear the snorkel on returning to the surface
  8. Swim 15 metres underwater
  9. Ascend safely from a depth of 1.5 metres
  10. Exit deep water safely and remove all snorkelling equipment independently
  11. Participate in 2 different snorkelling games

STA INLAND  OPEN  WATER 

  1. Enter the water, perform bunny hops and fully submerge twice
  2. Wade 8 metres through knee depth water
  3. Perform a slide-in entry or wading entry with a pole
  4. Perform an assisted walk-out or a stirrup lift
  5. Perform a duck under and fully submerge
  6. Perform a dolphin dive under an oncoming wave or wading entry with a pole
  7. Swim 30 metres, with head raises every few strokes
  8. Tread water and hold position for 1 minute, responding to signals throughout
  9. Perform a buoyant aid rescue to a casualty 5 metres away and perform a rope throw rescue to a casualty 8 metres away
  10. Run 50 metres, enter safely, swim 30 metres head up front crawl, tread water, swim 30 metres head up breaststroke, exit and run 25 metres to the finish
  11. Answer 5 questions on open water safety

STA COMMUNITY  SAFETY  AWARD

  1. Enter safely, tread water for 30 seconds, shout for help and signal for 10 seconds. Roll from front to back then back to front, tread water for 2 minutes
  2. Perform two different safe entries and exits
  3. Perform a shout and signal, throwing rescue and a reach rescue to a casualty
  4. Perform a wading rescue to a casualty 15 metres away
  5. Perform an unconscious casualty turn and tow, check for breathing and perform an assist lift
  6. Deal with choking, stroke, asthma, heart attack and hypothermia
  7. Apply a bandage, sling and treat a bleed
  8. Check for dangers, check for a response, shout for help, turn a casualty from front to back and open a casualty’s airway and check for normal breathing
  9. Perform chest compressions and rescues breaths

  1. Run 100 metres in 30 seconds
  2. Perform a duck under
  3. Perform a 5 metre surf running entry
  4. Swim 25 metres using a head up stroke
  5. Run 25 metres, swim/wade 25 metres, run 10 metres to the finish
  6. Mount a boogie board, paddle for 2 minutes, glide to shore
  7. Perform a boogie board roll
  8. Mount boogie board, paddle 25 metres, turn and paddle 25 metres
  9. Swim 25 metres, run 100 metres, paddle 25 metres using a boogie board, run 25 metres to finish
  10. Perform a rescue tube rescue to a casualty 15 metres away

STA BEACH  SPORTS  2

  1. Run 150 metres in 1 minute
  2. Perform a dolphin dive
  3. Perform a 10 metre surf running entry
  4. Swim 25 metres using a head up stroke
  5. Run 50 metres, swim/wade 50 metres, run 20 metres to the finish
  6. Mount a boogie board, paddle for 3 minutes, catch a wave
  7. Perform a duck under on a boogie board and remount
  8. Mount boogie board, paddle 100 metres, turn and paddle 100 metres
  9. Swim 50 metres head up front crawl, run 200 metres, paddle 100 metres using a boogie board, perform a casualty pick up, run 25 metres to finish
  10. Run 50 metres, perform a rescue tube rescue to a casualty 25 metres away

  1. Perform a shout and signal rescue to a weak swimmer 5 metres away
  2. Perform a survival entry, tread water/float for 2 minutes, swim 5 metres to an aid, float using the H.E.L.P. position for 2 minutes
  3. Swim 10 metres front crawl, swim 10 metres head up front crawl, swim 10 metres side stroke, swim 10 metres breaststroke, swim 10 metres lifesaving backstroke
  4. Perform a wading rescue and tow to an unconscious casualty 5 metres away
  5. Swim 5 metres, perform a head first surface dive, swim 5 metres underwater

STA SEAL  2

  1. Perform a reaching rescue to a casualty 2 metres away
  2. Perform a survival entry, tread water/float for 3 minutes, swim 5 metres to an aid, float using the H.E.L.P. position for 3 minutes
  3. Swim 20 metres front crawl, swim 20 metres head up front crawl, swim 20 metres side stroke, swim 20 metres breaststroke, swim 20 metres lifesaving backstroke
  4. Perform a wading rescue and tow to a unconscious casualty 10 metres away
  5. Swim 5 metres, perform a head first surface dive, swim 3 metres underwater using a butterfly leg action

  4. Perform a 20 metre unconscious casualty retrieval and contact tow
  5. Swim 15 metres, perform a feet first surface dive, swim 10 metres underwater to retrieve an object

  1. Perform a wading rescue using a rigid aid to a weak swimmer 5 metres away
  2. Perform a survival entry, tread water/ float for 5 minutes, remove clothing, swim 20 metres to an aid, swim with the aid for 20 metres and climb out unaided
  3. Swim 100 metres front crawl, swim 100 metres head up front crawl, swim 100 metres side stroke, swim 100 metres breaststroke, swim 100 metres lifesaving backstroke
  4. Perform a 20 metre unconscious casualty retrieval, contact tow and breathing checks

  2. Tread water and hold position for 3 minutes. Every 30 seconds shout and signal for assistance
  3. Perform the H.E.L.P. position with an aid for 2 minutes, swim 20 metres and climb out unaided
  4. Swim 10 metres and perform a stand-off and reverse
  5. Perform a non-contact tow over 20 metres using an aid
  6. Perform contact tows over 15 metres
  7. Swim 100 metres in 4 minutes, wearing clothing
  8. Perform a rope throw in 55 seconds
  9. Perform a buoyant aid rescue to a casualty 15 metres away

  4. Perform a dolphin dive under an oncoming wave
  5. Swim 20 metres, with head raises every few strokes
  6. Tread water and hold position for 1 minute
  7. Perform a 5 to 10 metre safe surf entry run
  8. Perform a boogie board roll, remount the boogie board and continue to paddle
  9. Catch a wave and hitch a ride to the shore on a boogie board
  10. Run 30 metres, enter safely, swim 20 metres head up front crawl, exit and run 15 metres to the finish
  11. Answer 5 questions on ocean awareness

STA OCEAN  AWARENESS  2

  1. Enter the water, perform bunny hops and fully submerge twice
  2. Wade 15 metres through knee depth water
  3. Perform a duck under and fully submerge, surface in-between
  4. Perform a dolphin dive, surface, swim/wade forward and dolphin dive again
  5. Swim 30 metres, with head raises every few strokes
  6. Tread water and hold position for 1 minute, responding to signals throughout
  7. Perform a 10 to 15 metre safe surf entry run
  8. Perform a duck under with the boogie board, surface and continue paddling
  9. Perform a body surf
  10. Run 50 metres, enter safely, swim 30 metres head up front crawl, exit and run 25 metres to the finish
  11. Answer 5 questions on ocean awareness
