What Do You Want to Achieve?

Becoming a Teacher or Coach?

Swimming teaching is an active and challenging role and many local pools are always on the lookout for new staff. So, if you’re considering a career move read on.

Teaching assistants can earn £5-10 per hour on average, with more for Level 2 teachers or coaches.

It is also a very flexible career with teaching fitting in around your life. You can work as little as five hours a week or up to sixteen or more......

WHAT COURSES DO I NEED?

You start with level 1 but there are three levels of qualification you need to achieve to progress across any of the four disciplines: swimming, water polo, diving and synchronised swimming.  Most paid work is aimed at the level 2 qualification, so this is where you should aim to be.

Swim England is a leading provider of aquatic qualifications in England and is recognised by employers for setting the industry standard.

WHAT KIND OF JOB MIGHT I GET TO START WITH?

You could work in a learn to swim scheme, in a swimming club or leisure centre as an assistant swimming teacher - under the supervision of a Level 2 qualified teacher or coach to deliver swimming lessons to children and adults. You would help to teach wannabe swimmers how to move and be safe in the water.

Your job will be to assist in teaching/coaching some of these basic skills. Other tasks might include laying out the equipment ready for lessons and making sure buoyancy aids are safely fitted.

WHAT'S IT LIKE TO BE A SWIMMING TEACHER?

It’s a very rewarding and enjoyable career and a good way to earn money whilst you’re studying too, or as a part time career.

HOW MUCH DOES THE INITIAL QUALIFICATION COST?

Typically about £390, but with HALF Fish Training we start at £360, but don’t let lack of funds stand in the way.

There are bursaries and grants available which vary according to location but some even pay 100% of the course costs.

We even provide support for our local clubs or volunteers to enable them to get their qualifications on a much reduced rate.  Please get in touch for more detials
