Teaching Swimming

The STA Certificate in Swimming Teaching aims to prepare holders to teach, without supervision, pupils of all levels.

This is a four day course which is both internally and externally assessed at the end of the course by an external examiner and ongoing assessment due to the completion of portfolios, lesson plans and schemes of work.

All participants on this course must be a minimum of 16 years old and hold STA membership as well as the STA Award in Teaching Swimming. 


STA Level 2 Certificate in Swimming Teaching

The Swimming Teachers’ Association STA Level 2 Certificate in Swimming Teaching (QCF) can be undertaken after passing the STA Level 2 Award in Swimming Teaching. We recommend before undertaking this course you also gain experience teaching. On successful completion of this nationally recognised course you will be able to work as a swimming teacher, without supervision teaching learners of all levels and delivering the STA’s International Learn to Swim Scheme. You may also supervise an assistant swimming teacher or an STA Level 2 Award Swimming Teacher delivering their lessons to larger class sizes or advanced skills.


  • Be of 17 years of age or older
  • Hold current membership with STA • Hold the Level 2 Safety Award for Teachers qualification or acceptable equivalent
  • Hold the Swimming Teaching - Award or acceptable equivalent (this course will be run at the end of the STA Certificate course and is included in our prices).
  • Hold either the Safeguarding Children, Young People and Vulnerable Adults certificate (available online at TrainSTA) or acceptable equivalent

Note: If the requested pre-requisites are not supplied within 12 months of the course end date, the qualification will expire Validity of Award The qualification does not have an expiry date.

To remain as an STA approved swimming teacher, and to receive the benefit of STA public liability insurance, holders of the qualification are required to:

  • Remain in membership of the STA
  • Keep knowledge up to date with regular CPDs
  • Keep their prerequisite lifesaving qualification in date
  • Regularly update their DBS.

Minimum Length of Course 70 Notional Learning Hours:

The Swimming Teaching - Certificate covers:

  • Teaching Swimming, Lifesaving and Survival Techniques
  • Understanding How to Develop Participants Through Coaching Sport
  • Understanding the Fundamentals of Coaching Sport Assessment The assessment criteria are as follows:
  • Complete a portfolio and worksheet questions to the satisfaction of the course tutor
  • Undertake poolside teaching during the course
  • As part of an external assessment, teach a 30 minute lesson to 4 learners
  • Complete a 100 question multiple-choice paper with unit pass marks of 15/20, 15/20 and 45/60
