STA Award in Teaching

The STA Award in Swimming Teaching aims to produce teachers that can teach up to 10 beginners and deliver the STAnley Series of awards, as well as the Octopus and Goldfish Series of STA’s International Learn to Swim Programme.

They may also act as an assistant swimming teacher and can teach larger classes or advanced skills under the direct supervision of a swimming teacher qualified to certificate level.

This is a five day course which is both internally and externally assessed at the end of the course by an external examiner and ongoing assessment due to the completion of portfolios, lesson plans and schemes of work.

All participants on this course must be a minimum of 16 years old and hold STA membership.

 

STA Level 2 Award in Swimming Teaching

The Swimming Teachers Association STA Level 2 Award in Swimming Teaching (QCF) is your first stepping stone on your swimming teaching career. On successful completion of this nationally recognised course you will be able to work as a swimming teacher, teaching up to 10 beginners to swim, delivering the STA STAnley Series of awards as well as the Octopus and Goldfish Series of the STA’s International Learn to Swim Scheme. You may also act as an assistant swimming teacher and deliver lessons to larger class sizes or advanced skills if working directly under the supervision of an STA Level 2 Certificate Swimming Teacher.

Pre-requisites

  • Be of 16 years of age or older.
  • Hold current membership with STA (this can be organised on your course).
  • Hold the Safety Award for Teachers qualification or acceptable equivalent (this course will be run at the end of the STA Award course and is included in our prices).
  • Hold either the Safeguarding Children, Young People and Vulnerable Adults certificate (available online at TrainSTA) or acceptable equivalent.

Note: If the requested pre-requisites are not supplied within 12 months of the course end date, the qualification will expire Validity of Award The qualification does not have an expiry date.

To remain as an STA approved swimming teacher, and to receive the benefit of STA public liability insurance, holders of the qualification are required to:

  • Remain in membership of the STA
  • Keep knowledge up to date with regular CPDs
  • Keep their prerequisite lifesaving qualification in date
  • Regularly update their DBS.

Minimum Length of Course 49 Notional Learning Hours:

  • 28 Recommended Guided Learning Hours
  • 21 Non-contact Guided Learning Hours

Course Information The Swimming Teaching - Award covers:

  • Understanding the Elementary Scientific Principles Relevant to Swimming
  • Planning, Preparing and Teaching Swimming
  • Understanding the Principles for Safe and Equitable Coaching Practice Assessment
  • Complete a portfolio and worksheet questions to the satisfaction of the course tutor
  • Undertake poolside teaching during the course
  • As part of an external assessment, teach a 30 minute lesson to 4 learners
  • Complete a 30 question multiple-choice paper with a unit pass mark of 7/10 per unit
