Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is designed to allow those involved in swimming that already have skills, knowledge and undrstanding gained from continuous learning in sport or other sports to achieve qualifications without the need to attend formally taught courses.

What is Recognition of Prior Learning?

RPL is a methods of assessment that considers whether a learner can demonstrate their ability to meet the assessment requirement for a unit through skills, knowledge or understanding that they already possess and do not need to develop through a course of learning.

This means that learners can be assessed against current ASA qualifications taking into account their previous qualifications and teaching/coaching experiences.

Importantly it must be noted that RPL is not a short cut to qualifications as you must achieve the same standards and criteria as those learners attending a taught course.

Who is RPL for?

  • Learners with significant practical teaching/coaching experience who wish to obtain a qualification that leads to the ASA qualifications.

  • Learners holding an old ASA teaching or coaching qualification and would like to update it.

  • Learners who hold an overseas qualification who wish to gain UK equivalent qualifications

The table shows Level 1 Courses which will complement one another and following also with the Level 2 Courses which complement one another.
